Hogle Zoo Volunteer Awarded by State for Service

SALT LAKE CITY (Nov. 15) - After more than seven years of dedicated service as a Hogle Zoo volunteer, 19-year-old Justin Jarman will be the recipient of the Outstanding Young Volunteer Award at the 2010 Utah Philanthropy Day luncheon on Nov. 18.

"I am very happy to receive the Outstanding Young Volunteer Award for Utah Philanthropy Day. It is quite an honor. I have never received an award this big before," Jarman said. "I am proud that I was chosen out of all the volunteers that could have received this award."

The Outstanding Young Volunteer Award recognizes an individual, 30 years of age or younger, who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to the promotion of philanthropy and volunteerism through his or her work in the community.

Jarman began volunteering at Hogle Zoo at the age of 12, and has spent his time in a variety of roles, all of which have involved talking with the public. While interacting with strangers can be a challenge for most teens, it represented a specific hurdle for Jarman, who is autistic. But, his determination to share his love for animals overcame any fears he had, and it is that determination that makes him an outstanding volunteer.

Because of Jarman's dedication to volunteering, which included 260 hours of volunteering while commuting from Lindon on the bus and going to school, he earned the opportunity to train as an animal handler and use live animals in on-site presentations for the public.

"The best thing about volunteering at Hogle Zoo is working with the animals and I also enjoy educating the public about animals," Jarman said. "I like to volunteer because I have always wanted to work at the Zoo and volunteering has allowed me to do that. I will continue to volunteer as long as possible."

"Justin has done so much for the Zoo, both in animal care and in education. He has not only taught the Zoo's guests about the animals we have here and how to help conserve them in the wild, but he has also taught the Zoo staff a lot about working with autistic individuals," Hogle Zoo's Education Curator Chris Schmitz said. "Justin has been a trailblazer."

Jarman, along with fellow Utah Philanthropy Day award recipients Spencer F. and Cleone P. Eccles, Willard L. Eccles Charitable Foundation, Park City Mountain Resort and Scott C. Ulbrich, will be recognized at the 2010 Utah Philanthropy Day luncheon at Little America Hotel, Thursday, Nov. 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Utah's Hogle Zoo is one of only 223 accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA). Look for the AZA logo whenever you visit a zoo or aquarium as your assurance that you are supporting a facility dedicated to providing excellent care for animals, a great experience for you, and a better future for all living things. AZA is a leader in global wildlife conservation, and your link to helping animals in their native habitats. For more information visit www.aza.org.
