voluntary spies. ~ Jane Austin

SLAC’s New Play Sounding Series presents a public reading of Peter Sinn Nachtrieb’s T.I.C. (TRENCHCOAT IN COMMON) directed by Alexandra Harbold on Monday, November 15 at 7pm. T.I.C. takes its audience on a ferociously comic exploration of privacy and loneliness in our modern world. When her mother dies suddenly, a teenage girl finds herself with a new parent (the “seed source”), in a new home (a single house split into 4 units with a cottage at the back), and new neighbors (the motley and secretive residents of this Tenancy In Common). Suspecting something isn’t right, the Kid sets out on a mission to be the “Diane Arbus of the building”. She starts a blog about her new home; using photography, recordings, and research, she begins to pry deep into the lives and secrets of those that surround her. (Cue the whispers of evil plots and deepest fears.)

According to the playwright, “The play started initially as a desire to explore the issue of ‘Privacy’ in our modern world. Through the power of technology, it's even easier to be a voyeur, an exhibitionist and the capacity for privacy is diminished. And at the same time our government seems to be keeping a bit of a closer eye on our transmissions these days as well. I began exploring different ways people expose or spy these days and a teenage kid's personal blog about her apartment building seemed like the perfect way to explore the theme.” He adds with a typeface grin, “And it's also about how a good old fashioned flasher in a trenchcoat can still pack a real shock.”

The cast of the T.I.C. reading consists of Austin Archer, Anne Cullimore Decker, Darrin Doman, Cheryl Gaysunas, Elise Groves, Megan Noyce, and Nick O’Donnell.
