OUTreach Resource Center and Weber State University Center for Diversity and Unity present “Sister Dottie S. Dixon’s Holiday Extravaganza,” Saturday, December 11, 2010, 8pm in the Shepherd Union Ballrooms, WSU campus. The event is a fund raiser in support of OUTreach.* A Donor Reception will begin at 6:30 pm in the Kimball Visual Art Center, WSU campus. This will be Sister Dottie’s only outing for the holiday season so make sure you are in the audience for this entertaining evening.
Meet Sister Dixon, an active Mormon mom from Spanish Fork who loves her church and culture, her husband of almost 40 years - and her gay son. Her floor show, a comedy with what she describes as “moments of poignancy,” gives her an opportunity to make light of the trials she endures in a church that condemns her son and to make the audience laugh at her unexpected humor. And she comes at it from the inside, as a tenth-generation Mormon whose great-great grandfather, Heber Orson Maxwell O’Donovan, migrated to Utah, across the plains as a Mormon pioneer in 1847 with none other than Brigham Young himself.
Beginning with her weekly KRCL radio show, “What Not, What Have You, and Such as That,” she moved her story to the Salt Lake City stage and into the pages of a book last year. In the process she has become an active voice for the GLBT community. She is breaking new ground in Utah with her conversations on the subjects of homosexuals and the LDS faith. Fran Pruyn, artistic director of Pygmalion Theater Company says “(Dottie has) rural vernacular, cultural idiosyncrasies, a big heart and a big mouth. But there is something about her warmth and ability to love that draws you.” (See separate release for more info about Dottie.)
The floor show stars Sister Dixon but will also include additional entertainment by members of the Associated Actors and Technicians (A.A.T.) of Weber State. You can expect a lively evening of humor, music and dance to cheer you for the holidays.
*This fund raiser supports OUTreach, located in the lower level of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ogden, providing a safe, comfortable haven for open-minded youth, especially LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning) youth and their friends and allies; free of charge, judgment, harassment and discomfort. It is a drug, alcohol, tobacco, hate and violence free zone. The center is open on Wednesdays for those 14 -17; and Thursday for those 18 and older. More information about OUTreach and its other activities can be found at ogdenoutreach.org
Barry Gomberg, a board member of OUTreach, is heading this fundraising project. He says, “For the LGBTQ community, the OUTreach Resource Center is a safe haven in what is too often a stormy sea. Here, they find practical and accurate information, honest friendships based on honesty, and most important, unconditional acceptance.”
Tickets for the floor show are $20/general admission and $10/students. A Donor Reception will be held in the Kimball Visual Arts Center at 6:30. Donor tickets are $75/individual or $125/couple. Tickets will go on sale Friday, November 12, 2010. They will be available in person either at the Dee Events Center Ticket Office or the Union Building Information Desk. Tickets can also be purchased WeberStateTickets.com (“Concerts/Special Events”) or by calling 1-800-WSU-TIKS.
