Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: An evening of vocal performance showcasing memorable vignettes from both the opera and musical theater, SUU’s Music Masterworks Series presents a double bill with “Damsels & Demons,” student-directed scenes, and Puccini’s one-act opera, “Suor Angelica.” Performances run November 10 – 13, at 7:30 pm in SUU’s Thorley Recital Hall. General admission adult tickets are $8, $6 for SUU Faculty and Staff, $4 for students and children and SUU students are admitted free with a valid student ID.

Featuring scenes form opera and musical theatre, “Damsels & Demons” will include selections from Frank Wildhorn’s “Jekyll and Hyde,” Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods,” Otto Nicolai’s “The Merry Wives of Windsor” and Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide.” Students enrolled in SUU’s Opera/Musical Theatre course selected and directed scenes in Act I. Describing her experience as a student director, Geneil Perkins, Junior Vocal Performance Major from Moreno Valley, CA, commented that “directing for opera is completely different than just being in the scenes. You have this concept of what your scene is going to be like. However, you have to be really flexible and have alternative strategies when working with your performers.”

The evening concludes with Giacomo Puccini’s “Suor Angelica” (or “Sister Angelica”). After bearing an illegitimate child, Angelica is sent to a convent by her family. Seven years later, Sister Angelica’s faith is severely tested forcing her to make a choice that will ultimately affect her eternal salvation. Professor Carol Ann Modesitt directs an all-female cast in this one-act opera by the beloved composer, with musical direction by Gerald Rheault.

Enjoy an evening of musical favorites from opera and musical theater repertoire. For more information on the SUU College of Performing and Visual Arts events, please call the Arts Hotline at (435) 865-8800, or visit www.suu.edu/arts.
