SUU’S ART INSIGHTS TO FEATURE

PRESTON TROMBLY, SIRIUS RADIO HOST AND ARTIST

APRIL 7, 2011

Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: Best known to classical music devotees as a SiriusXM Satellite Radio host, Preston Trombly is also equally renowned as an artist whose medium is found objects/mixed media assemblages. The accomplished artisan talks about his craft and shares his experiences during his appearance at SUU’s Department of Art and Design’s weekly lecture series, Art Insights, on Thursday, April 7, 2011. The lecture begins at 7pm at Sterling Church Auditorium in SUU’s Sharwin Smith Center. Admission is free and the general public is encouraged to attend.

Preston Trombly has been an artist for most of his life. His first artistic successes were as a musical artist—composer, performer, and conductor. More recently he has been working in the visual arts. According to Trombly, “For me, the need to make art has been a driving force in my life. Whether it’s working with and organizing sounds over time, or more recently colors, materials and shapes in space; my work is about turning initially vague, fleeting and amorphous ideas into solid, concrete and comprehensible ‘objects’ (works of art)….My experiences composing and creating musical structures inform my current work in the visual arts. Found objects, pieces of metal, wood, fabric, and artist's pigments are the raw materials of my current work. Each piece begins when a particular juxtaposition of elements intrigues me enough to start working on a piece.”

Trombly received his visual arts education at New York’s Art Students League. He received his Masters in Musical Arts from Yale University, was a Fellow in Composition and Conducting at the Tanglewood-Bershire Music Center and earned his Bachelor of Music with Honor from the University of Connecticut. His work has exhibited in numerous museums and galleries throughout the greater New York Metropolitan and Tri-State area. Trombly has hosted classical music programs for various stations since the early 1990s. From 2004 to 2009, he was also the host of Sirius’ “Jabberwocky,” an improvisational talk show including storytelling and social and political commentary.

Art Insights is a weekly program hosted during the fall and spring semesters by SUU’s Art and Design faculty. Students and community members meet weekly to experience presentations and discussions by visiting artists and art educators from around the nation who share their work and insights and attend gallery openings.
