SALT LAKE CITY—The final week of the tenth anniversary Deer Valley® Music Festival includes three performances with the Utah Symphony in Park City, Utah. The Utah Symphony performs Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 on August 7. Then, on August 9 opera stars and the Utah Opera chorus serenade audiences under the night sky. The Festival ends with its seventeenth concert of the summer: a rock ‘n’ roll tribute to the Music of the Rolling Stones with the Utah Symphony on August 10.

The concluding chamber orchestra concert of the Festival features three pieces by Beethoven as well as a pair of suites composed by French composers Gabriel Fauré and Claude Debussy. Vladimir Kulenovic conducts this program on Wednesday, August 7 at St. Mary’s Church in Park City at 8 p.m. This performance originally included Utah Symphony Principal Cello Ryan Selberg’s performance of Dohnányi's Konzertstück for cello and orchestra. Mr. Selberg passed away on July 14, 2013.

On Friday, August 9 at 7:30 p.m. opera artists Celena Shafer, Daniel Belcher, Leah Wool and Ryan MacPherson and the Utah Opera Chorus join the stage with the Utah Symphony for Utah Opera in the Open Air. The program will include selections from opera favorites such as “Carmen,” “La Bohème” and “La Traviata.” Jerry Steichen conducts this program at Deer Valley® Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater. Chad Shelton was originally announced as performing on this program. He has been replaced by Ryan MacPherson.

The tenth anniversary festival will conclude with a tribute concert featuring the Utah Symphony performing The Music of the Rolling Stones. Brent Havens will conduct the Utah Symphony with vocalist Brody Dolyniuk in this memorable concert of the Rolling Stones greatest hits. The concert is on Saturday, August 10 at 7:30 at Deer Valley® Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater.

Artists

Utah Symphony Associate Conductor Vladimir Kulenovic maintains a guest conducting schedule that includes collaborations with acclaimed soloists Leon Fleisher, Mischa Masky, Akiko Suwanai, Augustin Hadelich, and orchestras worldwide. As a conductor, Kulenovic has been awarded the Sir Georg Solti Award, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Scholarship, Bruno Walter Memorial Scholarship, Charles Schiff Conducting Prize, and Alfred B. Whitney Prize. As a pianist, Mr. Kulenovic won the 2nd Prize at the Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Paris.

Maestro Jerry Steichen has established himself as one of America’s most versatile conductors. He currently holds the positions of Principal Pops Conductor of the Utah Symphony and Music Director of the Ridgefield Symphony (Connecticut). He also completed 16 seasons as Principal Pops Conductor of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. Steichen is the only conductor to have conducted each of the ten seasons of the Deer Valley® Music Festival.

Berklee-trained arranger/conductor Brent Havens has written music for orchestras, feature films and TV. Havens has also worked with the Doobie Brothers and the Milwaukee Symphony, arranging and conducting the combined group for Harley Davidson’s “100th Anniversary Birthday Party Finale.” He has worked with some of the world’s greatest orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic in London, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and the Atlanta, Baltimore , Dallas, San Diego Symphonies and countless others. Havens is Arranger and Guest Conductor for seven symphonic rock programs—The Music of Led Zeppelin, The Music of the Doors, The Music of Pink Floyd, The Music of the Eagles, The Music of Queen, The Music of Michael Jackson and The Music of The Who.

Brody Dolyniuk is a gifted, self-taught musician, capable of playing several instruments, with a particular knack for capturing the voices and mannerisms of characters from music, TV and movies. His first professional gigs were at piano bars in several U.S. cities, where he learned to charm audiences and expand his musical repertoire. Dolyniuk assembled Yellow Brick Road, unquestionably Las Vegas’ most successful classic rock band. Dolyniuk has made numerous radio and TV appearances, and he has even self-produced several large rock production-style shows utilizing multimedia, lasers and special effects. In 2007, Brody lent his vocal talents by singing several tracks on the mega-hit video game “Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock” and has also done several more for the new Konami game “Rock Revolution.”

Venue Information

Parking at St. Mary’s Catholic Church is limited, so carpooling and taking public transportation is strongly encouraged. No food or drink is allowed inside of the Church.

Maximum chair height at Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater is nine inches from the ground. Gates will open to all ticket holders approximately two hours before the performance begins. Patrons must be present to save a spot in line. Unattended items will be removed. Valid picture ID is required to pick up tickets at will call. No ticket reprinting is available for general admission seating. Outside food and drinks are allowed at the venue, and there are a variety of concession services at the venue offered by Deer Valley Resort.

HOST FAMILIES and VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Bountiful/Davis Summerfest International (BDSI) has been an annual tradition in Davis County for 25 years. BDSI is an exciting celebration of the arts that includes artist booths, ethnic food, games, children’s art activities, exhibits, folk musicians and dancers from around the world.

Over 200 international dancers and musicians travel to Bountiful each year to perform at BDSI. They come at their own expense and during their stay, are hosted by local families. The international guests enjoy this chance to experience American culture first-hand while likewise sharing their own traditions. Their introduction to American life is through staying in a host family.  The bonds formed during these exchanges have frequently blossomed into lifelong friendships.

“This was definitely a good experience because here, in a host family, you experience American culture.  In other countries, we stayed in a hotel.  Host families are different because they become like your own family!”

BDSI offers many other rewarding volunteer opportunities in addition to hosting.  Whether helping with park set-up, stage crew, security, and maintenance, or tending to the children’s art yard, hospitality booth or information center, serving as a BDSI volunteer is an excellent way to become more involved in the local community and share in the success of this dynamic event.  We are also looking for volunteers who can speak Spanish, French, Dutch, Taiwanese or Lithuanian to help as guides and liaisons to the groups. It is not necessary to speak the language to be a host family.

Bountiful/Davis Art Center is a 501-C-3 organization. “Sunset Sounds in the Valley” @ The Mundi Project Piano Ambassadors (WVC: July 29)

WHAT:           Founded in 2006, The Mundi Project provides open access to pianos and innovative performance opportunities that incorporate all the arts. Their focus is on, but not limited to, the piano. Unique to the Salt Lake area, the Mundi Project provides a strong commitment to multidisciplinary arts outreach through concerts and workshops for the community.

Todo Mundo “All the World,” who’s Organic Fire was voted “Best World Music Album” at the 2011 San Diego Music Awards, blends the musical flavors of Rumba, Reggae, Samba, Gypsy, and other South American and Caribbean rhythms into an irresistible groove.  The band is known for their high energy performances, which are led by singer and guitarist Santiago Orozco, a native of Columbia, and vocalist Governor Tiggy, from Jamaica.

August 3:  Bountiful Butterflies and CaterpillarsDiscover the many butterflies that all the Ogden Nature Center home.  Kids will enjoy a catch-and-release activity and then make a fun caterpillar

August 10: Nature Sun CatchersTransport nature finds into your favorite window space.  This craft is a favorite for all ages!
August 17:  Birding and Nature Walk  Learn how to identify birds while enjoying a short hike using binoculars and kid-friendly field guides.  Kids will make a fun, take-home bird craft.
August 24: Antics!  Learn about ants and how they communicate. Families can create antennae headbands or make cute ant magnets.

So much of the life around us is very small. Using hand lenses and microscopes, we’ll delve into the world and work of bugs, buds and other miniature beings.

NEWS: Paul Pollei- founder of Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation passes away

Paul Pollei, Founder and Artistic Director, of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation passed away July 18, 2013.

Paul Pollei has been a champion of piano competitions, a much sought after adjudicator, a quintessential teacher and presenter of lectures and master classes, and a brilliant performer. It would be difficult to catalogue his influence among pianists, teachers and audiences, or to find a contemporary pianist who does not have a fond memory and a story to tell about his or her interaction with Paul Pollei. 

During the 37 years of Bachauer competition history, approximately 1,500 pianists have competed, more than $430,000 prize money has been awarded, and countless careers have been launched. The Bachauer competition format has never been static. Paul Pollei led the way with such innovations as competitors free choice of repertoire, two rounds of competition with no eliminations, and organizing separate competitions for three different age groups of aspiring pianists. These innovations have been emulated by many other piano competitions.

The Gina Bachauer Foundation, the people of Utah, and, indeed, the people of the world, have been enriched by Paul Pollei’s many contributions. The music world has lost a dear friend.

The funeral will be held Thursday, July 25 at the Edgemont 21st ward, 2900 North Timpview Drive, Provo. The viewing will be the night before at Berg Mortuary, 185 East Center Street, Provo from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. There will be a viewing at the church on Thursday from 9:30 - 10:45 am.
