Adrian VanSuchtelen, Logan, was the juror for this year’s competition.  He was an art professor at Utah State University for 37 years and continues to make art, exhibit and win competitions throughout the state and beyond.  Juror’s statement:

“Making art is more than just a technical exercise.  When experimentation with a medium takes over the creative process for its own sake, something important gets lost.  The medium is a visual language for the artist’s voice, expressing ideas and experiences.  Words such as ‘tight’ and ‘loose’ commonly used in academic discussions, are empty terms because what we need first is the sincerity and loving care that we see going into the making of a quilt and the viewer should be allowed to gain some insight into the culture, time, place and perhaps some personal experience of the artist.  Everyone, regardless of education or training is capable of expressing their values and something about their human experience: birth, love, death and all the inbetweens.  It’s the important ingredient for good art and it’s for the most part what we find in the traditions and history of art.”

3rd place winner: Scott Terril, Wooley Buggers, Photography

The exhibit continues through March 9, 2012.
