Social Justice Activist Arun Gandhi to Speak at The City Library

February 15, 2011 – SALT LAKE CITY -- The City Library is pleased to welcome Arun Gandhi, co-founder of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence and grandson of India’s legendary leader, Mohandas K. “Mahatma” Gandhi, to speak in the Main Library Auditorium on February 29, 2012 at 7:00 pm.

Gandhi, like his grandfather before him, has dedicated his life to social justice and nonviolent political action. His work has promoted economic and social reform in India and the United States. In founding the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence with his late wife, Sunanda, he has been able to take the mission of creating a sustainable and just world to a global audience.

He has been involved in numerous peace projects, working with groups as wide ranging as President Clinton’s Renaissance Weekend organization to the Palestinian Parliament, requesting from the latter a mass march of over 50,000 refugees across the Jordan River.

Gandhi is a writer and journalist. He is the author of several books on poverty and social justice, and recently wrote The Forgotten Woman: The Untold Story of Katsur, the Wife of Mahatma Gandhi. He spent 30 years as a journalist for The Times of India, and has worked with the Washington Post, as a regular contributor to the On Faith section.

Gandhi’s speech at The City Library is part of National Interfaith Month in conjunction with the Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable. This event is made possible by the Salt Lake Community College Speaker’s Bureau, the Tanner Humanities Center at the University of Utah, and the Democracy in South Asia Forum at the University of Utah.
