ZION NATIONAL PARK ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE
MARCH 1, 2012
Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: Acceptance of extremes and the inability to control the world we live in were two themes explored and expressed by Zion National Park Artist-In-Residence, Michele Lauriat. Lauriat will discuss her experience at Zion National Park and the work she created during her presentation as part of SUU’s Department of Art and Design’s weekly lecture series, Art Insights, on Thursday, March 1, 2012. The lecture begins at 7pm at Centrum Arena, Section K, admission is free and the general public is encouraged to attend.
Michele Lauriat’s work excites your vision as it takes you to a place that you recognize, but as if it existed in another dimension. Her work created in Zion fought to observe and express what the average park visitor may miss. A month of her experiencing the aggressive, yet awe-inspiring mountains of Southern Utah and shifting her focus to find direction is sure to be an inspiring and insightful story to any artists or art enthusiast. In 2011, she earned her Master of Fine Arts in Studio Arts from the University of Massachusetts. Her work has been exhibited throughout the North East.
The Zion Artist-in-Residence program offers professional artists the opportunity to live and work in the majestic splendor of Zion National Park. The works completed under this program will contribute to the public understanding and appreciation of Zion National Park. It is the park’s hope that works produced during this time will characterize Zion for present and future generations and offer park visitors and the general public the opportunity to see America’s heritage through the creative vision of contributing artists.
Art Insights is a weekly program hosted during the fall and spring semesters by SUU’s Art and Design faculty. Students and community members meet weekly to experience presentations and discussions by visiting artists and art educators from around the nation who share their work and insights and attend gallery openings. Admission is free, and the general public is invited to attend.
