WHY:
One way artists are able to answer the irresistible human need for meaning about life has been through assemblage and collage. This process uses discarded non-art materials that are already familiar to each of us. These objects, whether old or new, are pulled from our collective experience and carry with them their past histories and associations. By combining and reorganizing these found materials into something unexpected, the pieces mix and create a new story. Because of this, the artist’s job becomes one of making links between found materials, forming new relationships based upon the function, meaning, and memories linked to the chosen objects. Regardless of the artist’s intent, the viewer will always come away from a work of assemblage or collage art with stories uniquely their own, stories based upon their own personal relationships with the materials used.

To further explore the variety of unique impressions that can be gained from a work of collage or assemblage art there will be two more facets to the show. One, a few writers will be invited to look at the work and use it as inspiration for a short work of their own.  These written responses will be on display, and a reading will be organized for the opening night.  Two, a musical group will perform a number during the opening; the piece will be inspired by the work on display.  These two aspects are designed to help the work appeal and be more assessable to a wide audience.
