SUU’S BRAITHWAITE FINE ARTS GALLERY
TO SHOWCASE “SUMA – THE PREVIEW”
EXTENDED THROUGH APRIL 14, 2012

Southern Utah University, Cedar City, UT: Due to an overwhelming response from the community, Southern Utah University’s Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery is extending the exhibition previewing the forthcoming Southern Utah Museum of Art (SUMA). SUMA – The Preview, which will provide an overview of the museum from inspiration through concept to a representation of the facility, will run through April 14, 2012. The exhibition is made possible by the generous support of Rainbow Sign and Banner. Running with SUU’s Art and Design Faculty Show and Senior BFA Exhibition, the exhibition is free and open to the public Tuesday through Saturdays, noon to 7:00 p.m. The gallery is located on the lower level of the Braithwaite Liberal Arts Center on the SUU campus.

Beginning with its inspiration drawn from the work of regional artist and Cedar City native Jim Jones, the exhibition provides patrons with insight into Jones’ desire to have an art museum in southern Utah. The show depicts the various aspects into the development of SUMA from community input to building awareness (SUMA Community Engagement Committee) and fundraising efforts (SUU Advancement and the Friends of the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery). There are early architectural renderings, floor plans, samples of the building’s exterior and interior surfaces, and fully realized sketches of SUMA’s interior.

As SUMA will be the first fully accredited museum to be staffed primarily by graduate (Arts Administration) and undergraduate (Museum Studies) students mentored by professionals, the exhibition will spotlight this unique aspect. This exhibition was conceived by graduate student Ernesto Perez. Reece Summers, Director of the Braithwaite Gallery, realized that outside help was needed to create a professional look for the exhibit and contacted the offices of Cedar City’s Rainbow Sign and Banner. The firm’s creative director, Shane Hopkins, and Customers Relations Manager, Steve Miller, were all too willing to come aboard as corporate sponsors of the exhibition. Rainbow’s Matthew Merkley took the concept and designed the exhibit with SUU Art and Design student Jeremy Christensen, a Rainbow employee, assigned to create a three-dimensional model of the museum. The result is a colorful overview of what SUMA will contribute to our community and southern Utah.

Owned by Jeff and Shelly Dansie, Rainbow Sign and Banner is a full-service shop that offers in-house services from design to installation. We are honored to support the Southern Utah Community. Our designs are innovative and have received national recognition. Our experience will guarantee the right substrate for the application, indoors or out.

Learn more about this exciting cultural attraction that will be contribute to making Cedar City and southern Utah a resort destination for art lovers. Do not miss SUMA – The Preview, now through April 14th at the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery.
