SUU’s ART INSIGHTS TO HIGHLIGHT
THE ARTWORK OF ANDREW MARVICK

Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: The ThursdayOctober 242013 installment of Art Insights will direct its eye inward to artist and SUU Associate Professor Andrew Marvick. Marvick’s recent work showcases his precise skill as both an artist and art historian. Marvick reveals that these “drawings and paintings are products of the early 21st century, of course; but they are also artifacts of the 20th century, made as though for the aesthetic discernment of the 19th century. The historicism of the images is, in fact, their predominant theme.” This free event will begin at 7:00pm in the SUU Hunter Conference Center’s Great Hall and the public is encouraged to attend.
Andrew Marvick presented a paper last year at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign which was subsequently selected for publication in a forthcoming Ashgate UK collection entitled The Symbolist Roots of Modernism. In the spring of 2013 he published an article on the American still-life painter Luigi Lucioni for the journal of The Cincinnati Museum of Art. In the summer of 2013 his new paper, “The Sisters of Atalanta: Distortions of the Classical Ideal in Fin-de-Siècle Art,” was selected for presentation at CAA in Chicago in 2014. In May he was invited to join the editorial board of the journal of ALMSD, an internationally recognized scholarly association focusing on Symbolist art, literature and music.  He traveled with his colleague Professor Jeff Hanson to Renmin School of Art in Beijing where he gave a lecture on Whistler and China and mounted an exhibition of watercolors under the group title “Day Corrupted and Enriched by Night.” Last month he launched a website for his recent paintings: www.andrewmarvick.jimdo.com.
Marvick has been working to explore the ideas and expressive properties of 20th century art through an abstract and non-objective style. His recent contributions to the SUU Faculty Exhibit at the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery incorporated bottles with scent-infused gels set just in front of his paintings. Marvick has had solo exhibitions in Utah, Wyoming, Oklahoma, California and Minnesota. He is represented locally by Artisans Art Gallery.
Marvick has been an associate professor of art history at SUU since 2005, previously, he taught and curated at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. He received his Ph.D. in Art History from Columbia University, his M.A. from UCLA, and his B.A. from Harvard University.
Art Insights is a weekly program hosted during the fall and spring semesters by SUU’s Art and Design faculty. Students and community members meet to experience presentations and discussions by visiting artists and art educators from around the nation who share their work and insights and attend gallery openings. Admission is free, and the general public is invited to attend.
Please join us to take advantage of this opportunity to get to know the artwork of one of southern Utah’s finest artists and educators. For more information on the SUU College of Performing and Visual Arts events, please call the Arts Hotline at (435) 865-8800, or visit www.suu.edu/arts.
