October 2013 Events at Ogden Nature Center

Wild Wednesdays -- Fall into Autumn

All ages welcome!
Fall has arrived. Come bring in the new season and learn how animals and plants adapt to a changing environment of less sunlight and cooler temperatures.  Don’t forget to wear your best flannel shirt.  Please meet in the Visitor Center.

Wild Wednesdays -- Owl Tales

$2 children / $3 seniors / $4 adults
All ages welcome!
Are owls really wise?  Get the answer to that question and many more.  Come meet two different owls and decode the mysteries that surround these amazing birds.  Please meet in the Visitor Center.

Pre-school Discovery Days – Bizzy Buzzy Bugs
Choose a date and time:
Tuesday, October 15 or Wednesday, October 16
9:30 am, 11 am or 1 pm on either of the dates above
$5 child/parent members
$6 per child/parent nonmembers
General admission rates apply to all other family members. Group/preschool registration (5 or more students) - $5 per child/parent.  Teachers and classroom aids are free.  A 50% non-refundable deposit is required. Pre-registration required. Call 801-621-7595 to register.

Buzz and crawl your way around the Ogden Nature Center as you hunt and net insects.  See a spider up close, grow your own wings, sing buggy songs and hear buggy stories.

Have you ever wondered what a snake feels like?  What about a tortoise shell?  Come find out and get an up close look at the Ogden Nature Center’s resident reptiles.  Learn why reptiles are so special in the animal world and meet a live Desert Tortoise and a Great Basin Gopher Snake.  Please meet in the Visitor Center.

The Ogden Nature Center education staff presents this not-so-scary Halloween event for the whole family.  Learn about native, nocturnal creatures like owls and bats. Take a crepuscular creep around the nature preserve where you’ll meet and learn from some “wild” characters. Make fun fall nature crafts, get down low at the spider web crawl, enjoy face painting, carnival games and more.

Utah has 18 species or kinds of bats.  Kick off the Halloween season by learning about these misunderstood and amazing flying mammals.  Please meet in the Visitor Center.

Putting Your Perennial Gardens To Bed for the Winter Workshop
Taught by Barney Barnett, owner of Willard Bay Gardens
Saturday, October 26, from 9:30-11 am
$8 members / $10 nonmembers
Ages: adults
Expert plantsman Barney Barnett will teach you the steps and tricks to putting your gardens to bed for the winter.  Learn what perennials to cut back in the fall and which ones to cut back in the spring.  Learn when and how to dig, divide and move perennials.  Learn what preparations to make for fall or spring plantings.  Also, ask any questions you want about perennial gardening.  Please RSVP by Friday, October 25 to 801-621-7595.

Come dressed as your favorite wild thing (anything in nature will do) and discover what monsters live at the Ogden Nature Center.  Learn why snakes hiss and how tarantulas move. Then test your nerve with a creepy crawly challenge.  Please meet in the Visitor Center.
