NEWS: Matthew Allred Exhibition at Finch Lane Gallery

MATTHEW ALLRED EXPLORES BOUNDARIES OF TIME AT FINCH LANE GALLERY

Salt Lake City—Matthew Allred’s work is paired with two other exhibitions at the Finch Lane Gallery that explore the themes of boundaries, time, and choices. The exhibitions run October 4 through November 15, with an artists’ reception on Friday, October 4 from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Matthew Allred’s photographic series, Heliography, uses handmade pinhole cameras and exposures that range from 24 hours to six months, creating an arc of time across the sky. He will present a gallery talk at 7 p.m. on October 18 during Gallery Stroll.

Matthew Allred’s recent works step back from the technological process of photography, and revisit the slow exposure of light in the medium. Using a pinhole camera and a chemical process he developed to combat overexposure, the path of the sun is captured and fixed. The subsequent work, as he describes it, “focuses on describing the expansive motions of extended time.” His exhibition Heliography: The Arc of Time presents the photographs created using this process.

Allred says of his work, “I wanted the camera to accumulate time slowly, like a meditation on its own purpose. When I study these photos I feel as if I’ve stepped into the mausoleum of time and the transitory nature of existence becomes painfully bare. It’s as if the image has somehow become untethered from reality. Regardless, I sense my own insignificance and a visceral dejection when confronted by the grander patterning of the heavens and the idea that time itself will die with its last witness.”

Recently, Allred has exhibited his work at Rouge Community College in Grants Pass, Oregon; the 35 x 35 Artists of Utah exhibition at the Finch Lane Gallery; the Dalton Gallery, in Rock Hill, South Carolina; and the Coconino Center for the Arts in Flagstaff, Arizona. Allred has degrees in photography from Boise State University and the University of Utah.
