Wicked Divas and Arturo Sandoval @ Utah Symphony and Opera

FROM BROADWAY TO HAVANA, DEER VALLEY® MUSIC FESTIVAL PRESENTS A “WICKED” THIRD WEEK WITH “WICKED DIVAS” AND ARTURO SANDOVAL

SALT LAKE CITY—
The tenth anniversary Deer Valley® Music Festival continues into its third week with a combination of two show-stopping productions. Broadway stars will steal the show in “Bravo Broadway: The Wicked Divas” on Friday, July 12, and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval will blow the audience away when he performs Latin, jazz and classical music alongside the Utah Symphony on Saturday, July 13.

Being wicked isn’t always a bad thing, especially when it comes to these divas. In “Bravo Broadway: The Wicked Divas,” Broadway hits will be sung by Broadway divas Emily Rozek and Nicole Parker, both of whom starred in the Broadway production of “Wicked” as the main characters. The performance will also include classics from musicals such as  “Phantom of the Opera,” “My Fair Lady” and “Chicago.”

The next night will provide a sharp contrast when Arturo Sandoval, one of the most dynamic and vivacious live performers of our time, takes the stage to perform unmatched Cuban rhythms with the Utah Symphony. Sandoval is a Grammy-winning trumpeter who can play Latin, jazz and classical music with unparalleled talent. This program will include tributes to his mentor, jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie, as well as selections of Sandoval’s own music.

Principal Pops Conductor Jerry Steichen will lead the Utah Symphony and guest artists in these memorable performances in Park City at the Deer Valley® Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater. “Bravo Broadway: The Wicked Divas” will be performed on Friday, July 12, 2013 at 7:30 p.m., and Arturo Sandoval will perform with the Utah Symphony on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 7:30 p.m.

Repertoire
The Tony Award-winning show “Wicked” is one of the most well-known musicals of our time, and it continues to climb in popularity. It has won over 42 awards, including Grammy and Tony awards, over the years. The feud and friendship between the main characters, Glinda and Elphaba, is illustrated in the latter half of the program, which ends with a touching duet, “For Good.” This song will be featured in the July 12 concert “Bravo Broadway: The Wicked Divas” along with other selections from the musical including “Popular” and “Defying Gravity.” The concert will also feature other popular hits from musical theatre including favorites from “Phantom of the Opera,” “Funny Girl,” “My Fair Lady,” “Chicago,” “Ragtime” and “Spamalot” as well as several symphonic selections from George Bizet’s opera “Carmen” and the overture to “Gypsy.”

The July 13 Utah Symphony performance with Arturo Sandoval will include several tributes to Dizzy Gillespie, legendary jazz master and pioneer, including “Groovin’ High,” “A Night in Tunisia” and “Burks Works.” The second half of the program will feature Arturo Sandoval’s own work including, “Surena,” “Dear Diz (Every Day I Think of You)” and “A Mis Abuelos.”

Artists
Maestro Jerry Steichen has established himself as one of America’s most versatile conductors. He currently holds the positions of Principal Pops Conductor of the Utah Symphony and Music Director of the Ridgefield Symphony (Connecticut). He also completed sixteen seasons as Principal Pops Conductor of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. Steichen is the only conductor to have conducted each of the ten seasons of the Deer Valley® Music Festival.

The versatile actress Nicole Parker is probably best known for the role of the “wicked” witch Elphaba in the hit Broadway production of “Wicked.” She has also performed other musical theatre roles including Rosemary in “How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying” and Juliet in “The Second City's Romeo and Juliet Musical.” She is currently reprising her role as Elphaba in the touring version of “Wicked.” In addition to her impressive resume on Broadway, she is also a comedienne as well as being a stage actress. For six years, Parker was a cast member and contributing writer on Fox's “MADtv.”

After her graduation from the Boston Conservatory, seasoned musical theatre veteran Emily Rozek made her professional debut as the principle role of Winnie Tate in “Annie Get Your Gun” starring Bernadette Peters. She has performed in various other musicals including as the understudy of Millie Dillmount and Miss Dorothy Brown in Broadway’s “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” Bloody Mary in “South Pacific” and Maggie in “A Chorus Line.” Most recently, Rozek appeared as Glinda in the Broadway production of “Wicked.”

Arturo Sandoval got his start when he began to play in the band in his village as a child. After his classical trumpet training at the Cuban National School of Arts he went on to be one of the founding members of Irakere, a band specializing in Cuban music. His masterful talent and incredible performance quality have allowed him to perform and record with diverse artists such as Gloria Estefan, Justin Timberlake, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra and Alicia Keys. He also enjoys a prolific solo career for which he has been awarded nine Grammy Awards, six Billboard Awards and one Emmy Award.

Hunger feeds a Variety of Appetities @ Weber State University: July 26

Hunger Feeds a Variety of Appetites

WHO: Weber State University and Universe City
WHAT: Fred Hunger: 2-D to 3-D
WHEN: 5-26 July 2013
WHERE: Shepherd Union Gallery, Shepherd Union Building WSU Ogden Campus

Former Weber State University Department of Visual Arts instructor and current student, Fred Hunger, will be the featured artist during the month of July in the Shepherd Union Gallery, Shepherd Union Building, WSU Ogden campus. Opening night will be held in conjunction with Downtown Ogden’s First Friday Art Stroll, Friday, July 5. The artist's reception will be held closing night, Friday, July 26, 6-8pm. The exhibit will open at 5pm on July 5. Regular gallery hours are Mon-Sat 8:00 AM- 9:00 PM. The Union Building is closed on Sundays during the summer.

Considering Hunger started out working as an space engineer, he ended up just where he always wanted to be - working as a full time artist. He has been learning and practicing his arts for more than 60 years. This exhibit will be a tour de force, showing his mastery of many art forms including 6 bronze castings, an acrylic painting, an airbrush watercolor, a wood sculpture, two steel sculptures, 3-D drawings, 4 serigraphs and an oil painting.

His work is disarmingly simple on first view. He allows the view to delight in the materials used, whether it is paint, paper, canvas, wood, steel or bronze. His elegant designs allow the materials to be celebrated and then used for sometimes humorous purposes. His maquettes (French word for scale model) for large public pieces are built to model train scale so he can perch or place model "people" in them to show the intended size. There is something charming AND amusing in these touches.

Originally from Stockton, California, Hunger now lives in Roy and has a studio in the North Ogden Cannery (behind Great Harvest). When it isn't gardening season, he spends most of his time at his studio in North Ogden or in one of the many studios in the WSU Kimball Visual Arts Center. He takes classes for the studio privileges. Not only does he follow the assignments he also does his own additional work. He likes associating with the faculty and students and finds them to be continually stimulating through the years.

NEWS: “Cloud” Recognized as One of Top 50 U.S. Public Art Projects

“Cloud” Recognized as One of Top 50 U.S. Public Art Projects
Americans for the Arts Releases Annual List

Three independent public art experts—John Carson, artist and Head of Carnegie Mellon University School of Fine Art; Norie Sato, artist; and Justine Topfer, Project Manager, San Francisco Arts Commission and private curator—juried the 2013 Year in Review. Their selections were announced on June 13, at the Americans for the Arts Public Art Preconference in Pittsburgh. The artists and commissioning organizations involved in creating and supporting these public artworks received letters of congratulations and certificates from Americans for the Arts.

Installed at Dixie State University’s Commons Building, Christian Moeller’s “Cloud” is a large bookcase in which the books’ spines form the pixels of an image of a desert cloud. Moeller’s proposal was selected from 223 preliminary applications from artists nationwide and then from four finalists’ presentations. The installation process started in August 2010 and was completed in May 2012.

“Our Public Art Program has been honored to commission three works in the last nine years that have received this recognition from Americans for the Arts Public Art Network,” noted Utah Arts & Museums Director Lynnette Hiskey. “This year’s recognition of ‘Cloud’ follows last year’s recognition of Susan Narduli's work ‘Land and Time,’ installed at the Utah Museum of Natural History. This series of honors started in 1994 with the recognition of Robert Perless' work ‘Sun Dagger’ at Utah Valley University Wasatch in Heber City. We’re thrilled to support public art that is garnering this kind of acclaim.”

The selection committee for the Dixie State University project was: Stephen D. Nadauld, Dixie State University – President; Kathy Cieslewicz, Dixie State University - Sears Gallery Director; Donna Dillingham-Evans, Dixie State University - Vice President of Academic Services; Lyman Hafen, Utah Arts Council Board; Dr. Don Hinton, Dixie State University - Dean of Arts and Letters; Frank Loijko, Dixie State University - Vice President of Student Services; Matthias Mueller, Utah Division of Facilities Construction and Management - Project Manager; Derek Payne, VCBO Architecture; Stan Plewe, Dixie State University - Vice President of Administration Services; Sherry Ruesch, Dixie State University - Campus Services; and Daphne Selbert, Dixie State University - Library Dean.

“By creating a sense of identity of places we inhabit, public art makes an enduring impact on our lives,” said Robert L. Lynch, president and CEO of Americans for the Arts. “We congratulate the artists and commissioning groups of the 13th annual Public Art Year in Review and look forward to honoring more great works in the coming years.”

Since 2000, the Public Art Network Year in Review has annually recognized outstanding public art projects through an open call submission and juror selection process. The Year in Review program is the only national award that specifically recognizes public art projects.

She continued to paint, and has exhibited work in galleries in Salt Lake City, St. George, Provo, Dallas and Flagstaff. Her work has been acquired by the St. George Art Museum, and is in numerous private collections.
