SUU’S BRAITHWAITE FINE ARTS GALLERY
SHOWCASES ART QUILTS, FABRIC COLLAGE AND EMBROIDERY
IN “EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN”
SEPTEMBER 27-- NOVEMBER 10, 2012
Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: A vibrant world of fabric, color, fiber, creativity and more awaits art enthusiasts this autumn when SUU’s Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery opens Everything In Between: Art Quilts, Fabric Collage, and Embroidery. Featuring renowned international, national and regional artists, this spectacular collection will be on exhibit from September 27 through November 10. The Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon until 7:00pm; admission is free. This exhibition is made possible through the generous support of the Friends of the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery and a sponsorship provided by the Cedar Chest Quilters.
Reece Summers, Director of the Gallery, invited Deborah K. Snider, SUU Assistant Professor of Art Education and art quilter, to curate this exhibit. She selected a total of 48 artists from the Masters of the Art Quilt and 500 Art Quilts books (Lark Publications), including several outstanding artists from her personal quilting network.
Contemporary fabric and fiber artists know no limitations: They draw, paint, stamp, tear, print, photo-transfer, stain, rust, discharge, fold, stitch, weave, glue, batik, tie-dye, distress, and embellish with beads, buttons, lace, and trims in realistic, abstract, non-objective, conceptual, and surreal artworks.
This exhibition will feature numerous associated events, and will kick off a biennial juried art quilt festival in the new Southern Utah Museum of Art, beginning in 2014. The inaugural exhibition this year has evolved into an exciting, collaborative undertaking according to Deborah Snider. “Starting with our initial vision of the quilt exhibit, we have expanded into six weeks of amazing and connected special events,” says Snider. “The incredible network of talent that is building around this project includes the support and energy of students, faculty, staff, and members of our surrounding communities. The entire project is coming together in perfect harmony.”
In addition to the Everything in Between exhibition, the Gallery will sponsor a remarkable variety of Saturday programs during the exhibition’s run. For more information about these events, please visit the gallery website at www.edu/pva/artgallerybeginning in mid-September.
The Friends of the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery is a non-profit group established in 1977, just one year after the Gallery was opened on the Southern Utah University campus. For nearly 35 years the Friends have helped enrich lives through their sponsorship of world-class exhibitions and outstanding arts education programs. Each year Friends'-supported exhibitions attract legions of art lovers from throughout the intermountain west. In Focus: National Geographic Greatest Portraitsexhibition saw a record number of attendees from throughout the region. Other Friends' supported exhibitions seen in recent years at the Braithwaite supported by the Friends include Francisco Goya: Los Caprichos, Chihuly Baskets, Soviet Era Art: 1917-1991 and Jim Jones: Recent Paintings. All of these exhibitions were free to the general public.
