NEWS: International Choral Academy @ Salt Lake Choral Artists (2012-13 Season)

The Salt Lake Choral Artists are excited to announce the opening of their International Choral Academy! Intended for students of all levels and interests, the ICA is open to all interested community members who want to improve their musical knowledge. Courses include conducting, musicianship, group voice, and choral literature, all taught by qualified instructors and approved for lane change and re-licensure credit for teachers. Come learn a new skill or sharpen an old one! Classes begin next week, so enroll today!

Fall 2012

Choral Conducting Seminar (Intermediate to Advanced) (8 weeks)

September 24, October 1, 8, 15, 22, November 26, December 3, 10

Become the conductor you have always wanted to be - improve your conducting skills and rehearsal techniques in a friendly and nurturing class setting. Weekly sessions will be designed to suit the needs of the class participants and cover such topics as score study and preparation, dynamic phrasing, acquiring and using meaningful conducting gestures, effective rehearsal techniques, and programming.
During the 4-week break class participants will prepare conducting projects designed to support their current work or future conducting goals. Class members are encouraged to register for the Choral Literature and Techniques Seminar offered during this 4-week period.

If your schedule will not allow participation on all scheduled dates, you may make up missed classes during the Spring 2013 session.

Course Fee: $200
($175 for SLCA Members)


Choral Literature and Techniques Seminar (4 weeks)

The course is a survey of important choral literature through style periods and genres, including the most historically significant composers. Music appropriate for church, school, and community choirs will be highlighted and performance practices/style issues will be considered.

Course Fee: $100 ($75 for those who also register for a conducting course)

Beginning Conducting (4 weeks)

Session One: October 1, 8, 15, 22
Session Two: November 26, December 3, 10, 17

For beginning conductors (church choirs, school and community groups), this course offers instruction in beat patterns, score selection and preparation, and expressive gesture. Practical application to each student's current needs will be part of each session.

Course Fee: $90 per session
($75 per session for SLCA Members)


Basic Musicianship (8 weeks)

Wednesdays, 6-6:50 pm

This course is to establish the basic understanding and skill set needed to succeed in the choral ensemble. Topics include:
  • Notation - reading notation and signatures
  • Basic theory - major/minor scale construction, triads, inversions, basic harmonicfunctions
  • Ear training - intervals, triads, major/minor scalar relationships (within the scale and between scales), basic harmonic functions, melodic dictation.

Course Fee: $90
($75 for SLCA Members)

Intermediate Musicianship (8 weeks)
Tuesdays, 6-6:50 pm
September 25-November 13

This course is for those with a basic understanding of music. It is to improve musicianship, and make more complex music accessible. Topics include:

  • Notation - compound and asymmetrical meters, proportions
  • Intermediate theory - seventh chords, inversions, intermediate harmonic functions
  • Ear training - continued intervals, seventh chords, intermediate harmonic functions, dictation.  
Course Fee: $90
($75 for SLCA Members)

Group Voice (8 weeks)

Understand the singing instrument, and learn to apply good basic singing techniques through lecture, group discussion, group singing, lab performance, and listening to others as they apply the skills taught in the course.

Course Fee: $90 per session

Summer 2013

Conducting Workshop            June 24-28, 2013

9am-12 noon   -  Beginning to Intermediate, SLCA Building
1:00-4:00 pm  -  Advanced Class (For those who have taken the SCI Conducting Workshop in a prior year) 

Become the conductor you have always wanted to be - improve your rehearsal
techniques and conducting skills in a friendly and nurturing class setting. Daily sessions will cover such topics as tips for selecting choral literature, score study and preparation, dynamic phrasing, acquiring and using meaningful conducting gestures, effective rehearsal techniques, and beautiful singing. Students will have opportunities to conduct the class as a lab chorus, to sing in the Salt Lake Choral Artists Summer Institute Chorus (Session III: "Choral Masterworks," and to rehearse works by Mozart and others. Conducting sessions are videotaped for personal evaluation. Participants receive a packet of materials for each session. Music costs for the weekend session are extra. Conductors of any level are welcome-from beginning to advanced. This summer we will offer two different classes to allow more advanced training.

Session Fee: $300 ($60 per day/ $20 per hour of conducting instruction; includes additional 10 hours for Session III of the Summer Choral Institute)
Music Fee: $25
