SUU’S ART INSIGHTS TO FEATURE
LISA L. CYR, FANTASY ARTIST / AUTHOR,
MARCH 21, 2013

Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: Explore the content-driven multidisciplinary world of texture, layers, and color with fantasy artist, Lisa L. Cyr. This specialized and experimental artisan shares her craft during her presentation for SUU’s Department of Art and Design’s weekly lecture series, Art Insights, on Thursday March 21, 2013. The lecture begins at 7pm in the Great Hall within SUU’s Hunter Conference Center. Admission is free and the general public is encouraged to attend.

Lisa L. Cyr is an accomplished artist and author with a content-driven and varied approach. Her highly imaginative, fantasy-inspired works use layers of metaphor and allegory to stimulate curiosity, provoke thought, and encourage further inspection. A poetic rhythmic synthesis of drawing, painting, collage, and assemblage, Cyr's visually-textured mixed-media work is composed to collectively create a new reality with a more expressive and symbolic arrangement. Cyr’s expansive visual vernacular and innovative use of alternative materials and approaches transcends mere technique, creating a dynamic pictorial idiom that is not only multidimensional but also multi-sensual.

Cyr obtained her bachelor of fine arts from The Massachusetts College of Art and her master of arts from Syracuse University. Cyr's artistic oeuvre has been exhibited both nationally and internationally in museums, galleries, universities, and at industry organizations including traveling shows with the Society of Illustrators of New York and Los Angeles. Her work has been featured in numerous magazines, books, and online including features in Spectrum: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art. Cyr's art is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of American Illustration as well as in private collections.

Cyr writes for many of the creative industry's leading art publications and has authored seven books on art and design, including the cutting-edge mixed-media best sellers, Experimental Painting and Art Revolution (North Light Books). Cyr speaks actively about successful promotional strategies, marketing opportunities, and entrepreneurial endeavors for the creative industry, and she gives workshops on creating imaginative and figurative art using innovative mixed-media techniques at professional organizations, universities, and trade conferences. She also teaches in several of the top MFA graduate programs in the country. She is an artist member of the Society of Illustrators in New York City and the International Society of Experimental Artists. Cyr works in partnership with her husband Christopher Short, a painter, 3D illustrator, and animator. For more information, visit her website at CyrStudio.com.

Art Insights is a weekly program hosted during the fall and spring semesters by SUU’s Art and Design faculty. Students and community members meet weekly to experience presentations and discussions by visiting artists and art educators from around the nation who share their work, insights, and attend gallery openings. Admission is free, and the general public is invited to attend.
