VENDORS ANNOUNCED FOR MARCH WINTER "POP-UP" FARMERS MARKET
Theme of "Easter Eggs & Spring Greens" at Hellenic
Cultural Center at the Greek Orthodox Church.
Salt Lake City
(March 14, 2013) - The Downtown Alliance´s fifth Winter "Pop-Up" Farmers Market will be held on
March 16th at the Hellenic Cultural Center, home of the Greek Festival.
Located at 279 S and 300 W, the market will be open from
10 AM - 3 PM and focus on a theme of "Easter Eggs & Spring Greens."
Along with dozens
of ready-to-dye eggs for Easter from local farms, the market will have a
large variety of produce including baby spinach, mixed greens,
lettuces, asparagus, arugula, potatoes and zucchini. Other offerings
include local, grass-fed lamb, beef and pork. Visitors
can also sample and purchase handmade cheeses, gourmet spreads and
jams, breads, pastries, gluten-free products and other artisan foods.
"This
market is unique in that we´ll have local
farmers sharing information about their Community Supported Agriculture
programs, ," said Alison Einerson, Winter Market Manager. "CSAs are yet
another way the Downtown Farmers
Market continues to connect our community with their farmers and
growers
and to create a sustainable, healthy food system. ."
CSAs are programs offered by farmers that offer a box of fresh
produce and other goods weekly to those who have signed up for the
program in advance.
These one-day "pop-up"
events, emphasizing local food, are held monthly (November - April) at
different downtown locations. A pop-up concept offers only dates, times
and themes in advance, location and vendor lists are announced just
prior.
A Winter Market encourages local producers to increase food production in the winter months by providing
a direct marketing outlet for sales.
The Downtown Alliance´s
strategy is to use the Pop-Up winter markets to build awareness and
support for a year-round market. The objective is to expand to weekly
winter markets by next year, with the ultimate goal of a daily,
year-round Public Market in the future.
