BALLROOM DANCE STUDENTS SHINE
AT SAN DIEGO COMPETITION
Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: The ballroom dance company performed in formation to the international
Latin ballroom dance rhythms, and the judges took notice. On March 2, 2013, SUU´s Ballroom Dance Company took third place in the Latin team formation
competition at the Dance by the Shores
collegiate ballroom dance competition hosted by the University of California-San
Diego, in La Jolla, California. Additionally, members of the company garnered
many awards through individual competition events.
Included among the individual award recipients are Chase Ellet and Gianna Loprest
winning 2nd place in Open Hustle, Matthew Whitchurch and Annekke
Walker winning 5th place in Newcomer Cha Cha, Hadley Gasser and
Yolimar Lara winning 3rd place in bronze-level Viennese Waltz and 4th
place in bronze-level American Tango, and Dustin Liechty and Chandler Hall
winning 6th place in gold-level American Foxtrot. Winning three
consecutive places in Open Lindy Hop are Kipp Lewis and Tori Trent winning 2nd
place, Ammon Garcia and Alex Shaner winning 3rd place, and Jake Ross
and Brielle Francom winning 4th place. In multiple-dance events,
Dustin Liechty and Jessica Alejandro won 5th place in Novice Open
Latin, which is a three-dance event. Dustin Liechty then partnered with Rachel
Hinde in a four-dance event winning 3rd place in Pre-Championship
Open Latin.
Andrea Johnson, SUU Ballroom Dance Company Director traveled with the team and
coached them during the competition. She said all the "dancers performed
superbly" and was proud of how the students represented the University.
This competition is a
precursor to the ballroom dance company´s annual upcoming event, Dancing
with the Stars on Wednesday,
March 27, 2013. This event is ideal for anyone interested in seeing the
ballroom dance company perform locally and is one of the ballroom company´s
most popular events of the year. The event begins at 7:30pm and takes place in the Centrum
Arena on Southern Utah University campus. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $8
for all students. Tickets may be purchased through the SUU Ticket Office (435-586-7872
Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm), through an SUU Ballroom Dance Company member, or

ABOUT THE COLLEGE
The Southern Utah University
College of Performing and Visual Arts is comprised of nationally accredited
departments of Art and Design, Music, Theatre Arts and Dance, as well as a
Center for Shakespeare Studies and a graduate program in Arts Administration.
The College offers 16 different degree areas, including liberal arts Bachelor
of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees; professional Bachelor of Music and
Bachelor of Fine Arts in art and theatre degrees; and a Master of Fine Arts in
Arts Administration degree. The Center for Shakespeare Studies offers a minor
