SALT LAKE CITY, UT –Repertory Dance Theatre's Ring Around the Rose program is excited to welcome back, Ripple Tales on April 13, 2013. This wiggle-friendly and interactive show is perfect for all ages and sure to ignite your imagination and spark your creativity.
Ripple Tales lives as a wildly entertaining and spunky duo. Roz Newmark and Mary Johnston-Coursey have been collaborating in dance, music and storytelling for over 20 years. They have performed together throughout Utah in theaters, festivals, libraries, and schools. Through Ripple Tales, they create their own stories, as well as re-tell both classic and contemporary stories. No story is left unchanged by their creative play together.
Like many storytellers, Mary and Roz draw from a strong music background, interspersing songs and tunes throughout their stories. Their use of movement, however, is truly unique, as they fluidly switch roles, serve as props for each other, and go beyond narration to fully embody the drama. Their mark as storytellers is to develop the characters in surprising and delightful ways, with unexpected turns to the plot, while inviting the audience to participate in the telling of the story through sound and movement play.
The Ring Around the Rose show on April 13 will be a combination of favorite Ripple Tales stories of the past. "A Celebration of Ripple Tales" will combine three stories and artfully move back and forth between them. A hungry wolf on his birthday drools after scones, piggies, and a certain red-caped girl; a little boy playing on the beach finds that his prowess at digging earns him a day of adventure on a pirate ship; and an unlikely pair of friends - a worm and a fungus - save the town's community garden from an underhanded developer and certain ruin. In additional to the usual music, props, and movement, they have also incorporated puppetry into the mix for this exciting new show. It is an hour of play and fun that will invite the child in everyone to come forth.
