Adrian Maxson Scholarship for Social Justice Recipient
WHO: Cameron Morgan
WHAT: 1st Adrian Maxson Scholarship Recipient (2008)
WHEN: Appearing in the Concert for Adrian 4, September 10.
Richard Cameron Morgan received the first scholarship named for WSU Department of Performing Arts Computer Lab Director Mark Maxson’s son, Adrian. Morgan will be giving a short speech on the award at the Concert for Adrian 4 on Saturday, September 10, 7:30, in the Austad Auditorium, Val A. Browning Center for the Performing Arts.
Morgan says, “The Adrian Maxson scholarship is a truly inspired initiative that was founded to support social engagement in the Ogden community and beyond. I was the first ever recipient of this nascent, but important, award two years ago. My organizing and activism, especially in regards to founding and running Weber State STAND (student anti-genocide coalition), made me an ideal candidate for the scholarship at that time. Without this award I would have been forced to work a full-time job instead of focusing on activism and graduation. Receiving the Adrian Maxson scholarship reminded me that the outside world noticed the work I was doing and were positively impacted by my actions. This realization furthered my resolve to live for service which has helped to enrich my life. By supporting this scholarship you are supporting the betterment of this state, one individual at a time.
“Since receiving the Adrian Maxson Scholarship, I have traveled to Kenya on a humanitarian trip, finished two internships in DC [Enough Project and Pal-Tech], become an Employment Case Manager at the Refugee and Immigrant Center (AAU, current) and have graduated from WSU with my Bachelors. Before leaving WSU, I continued my work with STAND and Amnesty International. Currently, I also volunteer at the English Skills Learning Center, where I teach a Bhutanese couple English. On the side, I am writing a book of poetry and am managing a local musician (and trying to learn Swahili!-though this is difficult!).”
The Adrian Maxson Scholarship for Social Justice was established to honor Adrian’s life and his activism. Adrian was struck by a car and killed on April 3, 2007 after leaving a benefit concert hosted by WSU Amnesy International. Adrian was an early college student at WSU and also a student a DaVinci Academy in Ogden. He intended to find a career to enable him to improve the lives of others around the world.
The scholarship in his name recognizes outstanding students who are engaged politically, socially and creatively in the community. Applicants submit a resume and a brief essay describing his/her qualitications for the award. For more information about the scholarship: http://organizations.weber.edu/AdrianLMaxsonScholarship/

Jazz at the Station with Benjamin Jennings and the Rectifiers @ WSU: Sept 14
A New Jazz Season
Who: WSU Department of Performing Arts & The Union Station Foundation
What: Jazz at the Station with Benjamin Jennings and the Rectifiers
When: Wednesday, 14 September 2011, 7:00 pm
Where: Ogden’s Union Station Grand Lobby
Tickets: No tickets are required for this Free performance.
Weber State University Department of the Performing Arts and the Union Station Foundation present Jazz at the Station with Benjamin Jennings and The Rectifiers, Wednesday, September 14, 7:00 pm in the Grand Lobby of Ogden’s Union Station. The Rectifiers are Adam Kozlewki, guitar; Clint Stanger, bass; and Bobby Gilbert, drums. The program could also feature other jazz musicians in the area, doing what they do best.
Jennings performs with jazz ensembles and other groups in the northern Utah area. In addition to being a musician, Jennings also assists in producing the Jazz at the Station program and is often included in the “and friends” option of other players such as Zoltan Vegvari, Viktor Uzur and Joe McQueen. His love of jazz really began when he first started attending Jazz in the Skyroom, the earliest incarnation of this program, in 1998. Listening to and meeting jazz musicians changed the direction of his musical interests. He now works to share that interest with others.
The Rectifiers personnel:
Brought up in Montana, Adam Kozlewski began by teaching himself to play more than 20 years ago. He was also guided by his stepfather, singer/songwriter/guitarist, Paul “Dr. Mongo” Garrison. Kozlewski started by playing rock, later adding blues, folk and jazz to his repertoire. Adam studied guitar performance at Utah State University for a year before moving to the Ogden area. He is now a graduate of the music education program at Weber State University, with an emphasis on guitar. Kozlewski also performs both solo and duo gigs at various venues along the Wasatch Front. He has perfomed with the WSU Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo under Dr. Don Keipp, and the WSU classical guitar ensembles under Todd Woodbury.
Clint Stanger, from Roy, began taking guitar lessons from Dan McKay at 13, and never looked back. The first song he learned was Nirvana’s version of The Man Who Sold the World. He got started on a healthy dose of grunge/alternative, but soon branched out into folk, blues, jazz, and classical guitar. He has been teaching guitar since 2004 and has picked up the drums, bass, and even a little piano on the side, making him a well-rounded musician. Specializing in a variety of styles, Clint likes the challenge of rock, blues, folk, western, and jazz. He recently graduated from WSU where he was a member of the WSU Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo
Bobby Gilgert is a sophomore at WSU and is a member of the WSU Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo.
Jazz at the Station provides an all-ages venue for jazz fans and students. Well behaved children are welcome to attend as long as they do not disturb the performers or members of the audience.
