The Weber State University Department of Performing Arts presents the WSU Jazz Ensemble Thursday, October 4, at 7:30 pm in the Allred Theater, Val A. Browning Center for the Performing Arts. This will be the WSU directing debut of Dr. Shannon Roberts, the new WSU Jazz Ensemble director. The 18-piece jazz band will perform a wide range of selections spanning the last 70 years of big band jazz. The band will feature music from Count Basie, Bob Mintzer, Allen Vizutti, Bobby Sherwood, Buddy Rich and Henry Glover.
Of special note are two new arrangements written for the WSU Jazz Ensemble by Dr. Roberts: “I’ll Drown in My Own Tears,” featuring tenor saxophonist David Leavitt and pianist Casey Wood in a Gospel “3” tribute; and “Away We Go!” showcasing set drummer Tyler Torrico and trumpeter David Bertram in a tribute to the Vegas Style Buddy Rich Band. Also on the concert will be members of the WSU Jazz Combo, who will perform four contrasting pieces from the standard jazz repertoires.
Tickets are $7/$6. Those with military identification will receive the student price.
