SPECIAL ART INSIGHTS WEEK

NOVEMBER 7 & 8,
2012
Southern Utah
University, Cedar City, Utah: There is just too much
great art and too many artists in southern Utah! On two consecutive nights, SUU´s Department of Art and Design´s weekly lecture
series, Art Insights offers presentations
by two remarkable creative individuals. On Wednesday, November 7th,
Zion Artist-in-Residence Michal Luch Onyon,
painter, discusses her experience in the National Park, then on Thursday November 8, 2012, illustrator and painter Rick Graham offers his presentation.
Onyon´s lecture will be held in the Centrum room 229 while Graham´s will
present in the Centrum Arena, Section K. Both presentations
begin at 7pm. Admission is free and the general
public is encouraged to attend.
Michal
Luch Onyon received her BFA
from the University of Utah. Influenced by her artist parents, she began a
lifetime of creating art and her home has revolved around what was happening in
"the studio." A study of her work reveals a sense of delight and imagination. Michal
is inspired by the surprising directness of expression by primitive and folk
artists as well as many of the modern artists. She has been steadily gaining
recognition for her bold and colorful work. Michal began oil painting several
years ago after a career in illustration and graphic design. She jokes about
her past art lives." It seems strange to see the logo of a downtown restaurant,
an illustration, t-shirt, poster, or a river running catalog done in my past.
Fueled by ideas and assignments, I have made giant snowmen and wooden puppets
for O.C. Tanner Christmas window displays, designed and painted furniture,
constructed recycled art projects with elementary children, and done a ton of
sculpey stuff with my own kids. My hobby has been pleine aire watercolors done
on almost every vacation for 25 years. I think all these past experiences help
me as I discover that painting encompasses more than a lifetime of challenges
and ideas. It is a timeless feeling to escape everyday life by trying to capture
and reinvent from a world so much bigger and varied than we can imagine".
Rick Graham received both his Bachelors of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts degrees from the University of Utah. He is a painter whose art is currently featured at the Mockingbird Gallery in Bend, Oregon, and the Southham Gallery in Salt Lake City, Utah. Graham´s art career has included layout and storyboard art for animation, courtroom drawings and magazine illustrations. His work in found in numerous private collections and in the Spingville Art Museum´s permanent collection. Currently he teaches drawing and painting at Salt Lake Community College. For his Art Insights presentation, Rick Graham will offer an overview of the various areas he has worked in and address how he employs the latest technology for his art.
Art Insights is a weekly program hosted
during the fall and spring semesters by SUU´s Art and Design faculty. Students
and community members meet weekly to experience presentations and discussions
by visiting artists and art educators from around the nation who share their
work and insights and attend gallery openings. Admission is free, and the
general public is invited to attend.
