UTAH CHAMBER ARTISTS & Artistic Director Barlow Bradford present Christmas 2012: SLC (DEC. 3)

Utah Chamber Artists is celebrating Christmas this year with “The Three Bs” – Alfred Burt, Abbie Betinis, and Barlow Bradford.

The Alfred Burt Carols are a staple of the Christmas season. Barlow Bradford, the choir, and orchestra will focus on the Burt family tradition of sending Christmas cards that include newly-composed carols by showcasing the music of Alfred Burt and his grand-niece, composer Abbie Betinis.

The concert takes place on Monday December 3rd, 2012 at 7:30 in Libby Gardner Concert Hall. The highly-anticipated concert is a popular and meaningful way to herald the holiday season. Audience members are invited to wrap up the evening by joining the performers in the lobby for refreshments.

The 32-year-old Betinis lives in St. Paul Minnesota where she is an adjunct professor of composition at Concordia College.  Her music has been called "superb... whirling, soaring", and "audacious... edgy... thrilling".  Bradford will feature four of her carols. She has received and composed over 50 commissions for a wide range of genres.

Betinis points out that, “Rev. Bates G. Burt, my great-grandfather and a self-taught musician, began composing annual Christmas carols. He wrote both the text and music and sent them as Christmas greeting cards to his parishioners … .In 1942, Bates passed the job of composing the music for the annual Christmas carol to his son, Alfred S. Burt, a jazz trumpeter who had just received his music degree from the University of Michigan…. In 2001, fresh out of St. Olaf College with a degree in music composition, I decided to try my own hand at this family tradition.”

Barlow Bradford has composed two new holiday songs for the 2012 concert, “Was Not Christ Our Saviour”, and the rollicking  “Christmas Carol” set to a poem by 17th-century poet George Withers.
