GILBERT & SULLIVAN´s TRIAL BY JURY

NOVEMBER 7 THROUGH 10, 2012

Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: Only the masters W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan could transform rejection and abandonment into harmonious and delicious entertainment. Southern Utah University´s Department of Music´s Masterworks Series presents the musical satire Trial by Jury featuring singers from SUU Opera, Wednesday through Saturday, November 7 through 10, 2012. Performances will take place in the intimate Thorley Recital Hall within SUU´s Music Building. Curtain time is 7:30pm. Pricing for the Music Masterworks series is: General Adult Admission: $8, SUU Faculty & Staff: $6 and Student/Child: $4. SUU students are admitted free by presenting a valid ID at the door.

Under the stage and musical direction of Carol Ann Modesitt, Professor and Director of Opera and Voice, the evening promises to be a genuine laugh-filled romp rich with Gilbert and Sullivan´s trademark melody and wit. According to Professor Modesitt, "this is one of the great team´s funniest and most melodious pieces, complete with slapstick. The vocal students are simply having fun rehearsing the material, and they cannot wait to perform it for an audience." 

With music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W.S. Gilbert, Trial by Jury is a riotous one-act comic opera concerning a "breach of promise of marriage" lawsuit. Angelina, the abandoned plaintiff, faces off against Edwin, the heartless defendant, who once promised marriage to the young woman. As the trial gets underway Gilbert and Sullivan turn the lawsuit and courtroom proceedings into lighthearted satire lampooning the judge and the British legal system.    

The cast features Taliah Byers as Angelina, Brandon Campbell as The Learned Judge, Luke Johnson as Counsel for the Plaintiff, with Eric Liebhardt and Benjamin Lieske alternating in the role of Edwin. The ensemble includes Jacomb Clarkson, Rebecca Dayley, Kadee Esplin, Alisha Fabbi, Corbin Iverson, Jayson LeBaron, Christina Meikle, Annie Powell, Michelle Reid, Austin Schirling, Janese Shaw, Arielle Tholen, Sara Thorson, and Greg Watts. Sasha Bainson provides the musical accompaniment on the piano.

Bear witness as a wily would-be bride uses the British legal system to seek retribution in the witty Trial by Jury. SUU Opera presents this thoroughly delightful Music Masterworks one-act comic opera.
