Utah Museum of Contemporary Art Partners with One Million Bones for Family Art Saturday: SLC (NOV. 10)

The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art announces a special event on Nov. 10, 2-4 p.m. as part of its Family Art Saturday series. Children and adults who attend the free event will have the opportunity to make bones from either clay or paper that will be added to a large scale installation on the National Mall in Washington D.C. in the spring of 2013.

“We are excited to be partnering with Salt Lake Chapter of One Million Bones on this impactful project which connects the practice of art making to social responsibility,” said Jared Steffensen, curator of education at UMOCA.

One Million Bones is a collaborative art installation designed to recognize the millions of victims and survivors who have been affected by genocides and humanitarian crisis in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, and Burma. Its purpose is to create a visible movement that will increase global awareness of these crises while raising the critical funds needed to protect and aid displaced and vulnerable survivors.

For each bone made the Bezos Family Foundation will donate $1 for CARE's work in these regions up to $500,000. CARE is a humanitarian aid group and has been providing emergency relief and lifesaving assistance to the Somali people since 1981.

“This is a powerful way to help make a difference in numerous tangible ways,” said Shaleane Gee, deputy director at UMOCA. “In addition to generating financial support, making art with our own hands changes how we understand our world, which in turn shapes how we think and how we behave.”
