GUITARIST MATTHEW MARSHALL IN RECITAL

Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: The wondrous sounds of guitar will be featured in a special afternoon recital featuring one of New Zealand’s leading classical guitarists. Southern Utah University’s Department of Music presents Matthew Marshall in performance Thursday, November 15, 2012 at noon. The performance will take place at Thorley Recital Hall located on campus in SUU’s Music Building. The event is free and opened to the general public.
Matthew Marshall is Professor and Dean of the School of Creative and Performing Arts at Central Queensland University Australia. He was a prize-winner in the NZ Young Musician of the Year Competition in 1988, a recipient of an AGC Young Achievers Award and the UDC/Rotary Musicians Prize in 1989. He also won prizes in the Royal Overseas League Music Competition in London in 1990, Australia/New Zealand Foundation Awards in 1991 & 1995 and a New Zealand-France Friendship Award in 2006. He has since performed throughout Europe, Asia, Pacific Islands, America, Australasia, and from Iceland to Easter Island! In 2005 he gave a critically acclaimed solo recital in the Purcell Room at the Royal Festival Hall, London premiering major new works by New Zealand composers. He has also given over 100 concerto performances in New Zealand, Australia, Mexico, Russia and Germany including appearances with the Berlin Chamber Orchestra, the Guanajuato & Michoacan Symphony Orchestras in Mexico, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Kemerovo Philharmonic in Russia.
As a recording artist, Matthew has appeared on radio & TV since the age of 10 and also features on nine CDs for solo guitar, with chamber ensembles and with orchestra (alongside the Kronos Quartet, the NZ String Quartet, NZ Symphony and others). He is also an advocate for contemporary New Zealand music, with more than 40 works written for or premiered by him including six concertos and numerous solo and chamber works. Matthew has previously held positions as Visiting Professor at the University of Plymouth (UK), Director of Music at Dartington College of Arts (UK) and Head of the Conservatorium of Music, Massey University (NZ). He studied guitar in New Zealand and England with William Bower, John Mills and Gordon Crosskey and with David Leisner in New York. The program for the recital features Gigue by David Kellner, Australian composer Graeme Koehne’s A Closed World of Fine Feelings and Grand Design, Sonatina by Federico Moreno Torroba, Revoir Paris by Charles Trenet and Jongo by Paulo Bellinati.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE
The Southern Utah University College of Performing and Visual Arts is comprised of nationally accredited departments of Art and Design, Music, Theatre Arts and Dance, as well as a graduate program in Arts Administration and new Shakespeare Studies program.
