Salt Lake City- Utah Ballet, the resident company in the University of Utah’s Department of Ballet the presents acts II, III & IV of the enchanting Swan Lake to the Hayes Christensen Theatre stage in the Marriott Center for Dance. Known for technically and stylistically challenging roles, Swan Lake and the Tchaikovsky score has become one of the most beloved ballets of all time. This full-length ballet opens Friday November 9 with 7:30PM performances on the 9th, 10th, 16th and 17th, a 2:00PM matinee on the 10th, and a 5:30PM performance on the 15th.
Artistic Director Jay Kim and Associate Director Victoria Stocki, both faculty for the Department of Ballet, have a combined 23 years of performing the Mariinsky Theatre’s version of Swan Lake. They have worked tirelessly with the staff and crew of the Ballet Department to design and create the ballet with costumes, props and staging that are near historically accurate to the Mariinsky Theatre’s version. The Hayes Christensen Theatre is transformed into the world of lead characters Siegfried and Odette with breath-taking sets and a dramatic backdrop on loan from Ballet West as Swan Lake takes the audience through a magical journey of love, betrayal, forgiveness and despair.
The company of 27 talented dancers in Utah Ballet will dazzle audiences with this re-staging. “The Utah Ballet dancers have enthusiastically immersed themselves into their roles and shown great integrity and professionalism in their work” said Kim of preparing the company for the challenging ballet. Also featured in the program is the Department of Ballet’s Character Dance Ensemble, directed by Rick Wacko, Oliver Wilson from the Salt Lake School for the Performing Arts, and Guest Artist Lucas Horns, a Ballet West Trainee, featured in the role of Siegfried.
Performances are in the Marriott Center for Dance on the U of U campus: 330 S 1500 East. Show times are November 9, 10th, 16th and 17th at 7:30PM, a 2:00PM matinee on the 10th, and a 5:30PM performance on the 15th.
