Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: For this exhibition, the artists were young, creative and highly enthusiastic – all of whom had the same challenge to work only on a three-inch square piece of paper. The colorful and amazing art work created by area elementary school students will be on view in Southern Utah University’s Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery’s Future SUMA Artists 3 Inch Art Show. This unique project was created by the Southern Utah Museum of Art’s (SUMA) Community Engagement Committee to build public awareness for the proposed museum. The exhibit opens on Thursday, May 12, 2011 and runs through Saturday, May 21, 2011. The gallery hours are Tuesday - Saturday, noon to 7 p.m. Admission is free and the General Public is encouraged to attend.

All area elementary school students were invited to be a part of the Future SUMA Artists 3 Inch Art Show. During the month of February, art educators oversaw the 3-inch creations by their students in a variety of medium. The SUMA Community Engagement Committee provided the schools with the foam core columns for mounting the artwork. These columns were displayed in the schools during Art Nights in March accompanied by a mini-traveling exposition spotlighting the future Southern Utah Museum of Art and replicas of two uniquely different works by renowned regional artist, the late Jim Jones. The columns from all participating schools have been collected and will be displayed in the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery as part of this special exhibit.

The SUMA Community Engagement Committee has been formed to build public awareness for the Southern Utah Museum of Art. The multi-gallery museum will feature increased exhibition space including one gallery devoted to the works of renowned Utah artist Jim Jones, while additional galleries feature rotating exhibits. A benefit to all students will be a 2,000 square foot classroom and studio space for hands-on educational activities for K-12 school groups. This remarkable venue will be located on the campus of Southern Utah University.

The Future SUMA Artists 3 Inch Art Show is a great exhibition for the entire family especially children. All area schools are encouraged to bring their students to experience all the art in the gallery. For more information, visit www.suu.edu/pva/artgallery or call (435) 586-5432.

The Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery’s mission is to exhibit, collect and preserve historic and contemporary works of art significant to the interior American West. In addition, the Museum hosts art exhibitions that represent the principal artistic styles and periods of world cultures.
