SUU TO HOST HIGH SCHOOL HONOR BAND CONCERT
FEBRUARY 23, 2013

Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: Nurturing young and fledging musicians from high schools across the intermountain west is a rich and rewarding experience. When such gifted teenagers fuse together with members of SUU’s Wind Symphony, the result can only be an entertaining and enlightening event. Southern Utah University’s Department of Music hosts the High School Honor Band which culminates with a free concert at Cedar City’s Heritage Center Theatre on Saturday, February 23, 2013. This concert begins at a special time, 5:30pm and the public is invited to attend.

The High School Honor Band features outstanding students from over 20 high schools in Utah, Arizona and Nevada. The students are nominated by their band directors and selected by SUU’s Dr. Thomas Herb, Associate Professor of Music Education, and Dr. Adam Lambert, Director of Bands at SUU. The student musicians come to campus for intense day-long clinics and rehearsals for the late Saturday afternoon concert.

This year a new innovation was instituted as part of the Honor Band Concert. Participating schools had access to download sheet music from the SUU website that would be used as the audition piece. Then each school submitted recordings of their performance audition to SUU. From this selection process, the strongest musicians were chosen to be members of the High School Honor Band.

The program for the concert will include the SUU Wind Symphony conducted by Dr. Lambert performing A Jubilant Overture by Alfred Reed, Stormbreak by Jim Casella, Irish Tune from County Derry by Percy Grainger and Parkour by Samuel Hazo. The Honor Band performs The Hounds of Spring by Alfred Reed, Sleep by Eric Whitacre and National Emblem by E.E. Bagley – all conducted by Dr. Lambert. Dr. Herb leads the Honor Band for a performance of Café 512 by Ryan George.

According to Dr. Lambert, “this concert is a remarkable collaboration for both the SUU and high school students. Our students willingly share their time and expertise with these gifted high school musicians and watching them work together to produce some amazing sound is one of the great rewards of being a music educator.”
