NEWS: March 2013 Activities at the Ogden Nature Center

Preschool Discovery Days / Roots, Shoots, Springs and SproutsChoose a date and time:

Come celebrate all things new at the Ogden Nature Center! Whether green and growing, newly hatched, or shaky legs upon hooves setting out for the first time, appreciate your own growth and development in the mirror of nature. Wild Wednesdays: Owl TalesWednesday, March 6 at 3:45 pm
Free for ONC members
$2 children / $3 seniors / $4 adults

Are owls really wise? Get the answer to that question and many more as we meet two different Ogden Nature Center owls and decode the mysteries that surround these amazing birds.  Please meet in the Visitor Center.
 
Gourd BirdhousesSaturday, March 9, 11 am – 12:30 pm
Cost: $16 members / $20 non-members
Ages: 10+
When is a fruit not a fruit?  When it’s a birdhouse! We will teach you how to make your very own, one-of-a-kind birdhouse from a gourd.  All materials and tools will be provided and you will walk away with a completed birdhouse to hang in your yard – or enter it in our competition!  Space is limited.  Call and pre-register at 801-621-7595 by Friday, March 8 at 2 pm.
 
Wild Wednesdays: Going Green - A Special St. Patrick’s Day ProgramWednesday, March 13 at 3:45 pm
Free for ONC members
$2 children / $3 seniors / $4 adults

Green is the theme for the Ogden Nature Center’s St. Patrick’s Day program.  It’s time to get your green on and discover why so many things in nature are green.  Go on a scavenger hunt around the preserve searching for all things green. You’ll be amazed at what you can find!  Please meet in the Visitor Center.

Scout Saturdays
Saturday, March 16
9 am – Native vs. Invasive
10 am – Conservation
11 am – Venomous Reptiles
$5 per scout
The Ogden Nature Center provides the perfect outdoor classroom for scout activities. Have our teacher/naturalists help your scout pass off badge requirements during these 45-minute classes. Imagine what it would be like to have teeth that never stop growing. Rodents make up 40% of all mammal species. Join an Ogden Nature Center teacher/naturalist as we explore the world of squirrels, mice, beavers and porcupines. Meet in the Visitor Center.
 
Egg-cellent Adventure: Birds not Bunnies Egg Hunt Saturday, March 23 from 10 am – 12 noon
$3 members / $5 non-members
All ages welcome
Are you ready for a unique Easter egg hunt? Join the Ogden Nature Center’s teacher/naturalists on a true egg hunt challenge. Spring is the season for new birth. In this activity participants will learn about nesting birds found around the Nature Center and try their hand at bird identification. Several nests with painted wooden eggs will be the object of the hunt as you make your way along the trails. Locate and record your finds from each nest to win a prize. Make and take crafts and bird stuff to explore. Please RSVP to 801-621-7595 by 5 pm on Friday, March 22. 
 
Call for Birdhouse Entries -- 20th Anniversary! • Entries due March 25 – 30
• Awards presentation on Wednesday, April 10 at 5:30 pm
• Exhibit showing April 11 – August 31
Get out your hammer, nails, glue and screws and pull out all the stops to be part of this year’s twentieth celebration by building a birdhouse for the Nature Center’s Birdhouse Competition and Exhibit.  All ages may enter up to two works, and there is no entry fee.  Full details, rules and guidelines for the competition are at www.ogdennaturecenter.org.  Special thanks to the main sponsor of this annual event: The Utah Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Spring Yoga Class - Kundalini Yoga 8-week SessionMondays – March 25 through May 8
From 6:30 – 7:45 pm
Ages: Adults
This Kundalini Yoga class is ideal for beginners or for those who want a gentle practice. Bring your own mat and blanket. Wear loose comfortable clothing, and we recommend not eating for at least two hours before class. Taught by Bruce Fisk.  Please pre-register at 801-621-7595.
 
Wild Wednesdays: The Wild Truth - A Pre-April Fools Day Program Wednesday, March 27 at 3:45 pm
Free for ONC members
$2 children / $3 seniors / $4 adults
All ages welcome
Nature can weave some pretty tall tales, but that doesn’t mean they’re not true.  Come out to the Ogden Nature Center and test your nature knowledge with a true or false game, then explore some of the most unbelievable animals and plants on the planet.  Please meet in the Visitor Center.
 
Carve Your Own Wooden SpoonSaturday, March 30 from 10 am – 1 pm
$10 Ogden Nature Center members
$12 non-members
Ages: 12+
Local woodworker and artist David Wolfgram will teach how to carve a wooden spoon. David will provide a nice selection of local hardwoods to choose from including oak, cherry, apricot and more. You will pick your desired hardwood and then start carving! All tools and supplies will be provided. Space is limited. Please pre-register at 801-621-7595 by Thursday, March 28.
