Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: Contemporary graphic design as seen through the eyes of Chinese artist is the subject of Southern Utah University’s Department of Art and Design’s acclaimed Art Insights series. On Thursday, October 20, 2011, guest presenter Jiao Zhentao, a graphic designer from the School of Art at Renmin University of China, will offer a presentation of his art and creative process entitled “Underlying Spirit in the Chinese Characters.” The lecture beings at 7:00 pm at the Great Hall, SUU’s Hunter Conference Center, admission is free and the general public is encouraged to attend.
Jiao Zhentao’s appearance is another cultural collaboration between China’s Renmin University and SUU. Shauna Mendini, Dean, College of Performing and Visual Arts, announced “this Art Insights lecture marks the fifth cultural collaboration between Renmin University in China and Southern Utah University’s College of Performing and Visual Arts. We value this unique partnership with Renmin which is the second largest university in Beijing, China. It is an honor to have the members of its talented and learned staff share their insights and knowledge with our students here at SUU.” The most recent exchange between Renmin and SUU was a joint exhibition of the work of Eric Brown, Chair, SUU’s Department of Art and Design, and Ben Sowards, SUU Artist-in-Residence, at Renmin University in May 2011.
Graphic designer Jiao Zhentao earned his undergraduate degree at Tinghua University and continued on at the institution for his postgraduate work. As an artist, Zhentao has done long-term comparative studies of Western culture and the arts. He currently teaches graphic design at Renmin University.
The collaboration between SUU and Renimin University continues on Thursday, October 27 with a presentation by Chinese watercolorist Guo Yidan.
Art Insights is a weekly program hosted during the fall and spring semesters by SUU’s Art and Design faculty. Students and community members meet weekly to experience presentations and discussions by visiting artists and art educators from around the nation who share their work and insights and attend gallery openings. Admission is free, and the general public is invited to attend.

The Southern Utah University College of Performing and Visual Arts is comprised of nationally accredited departments of Art and Design, Music, Theatre Arts and Dance, as well as a graduate program in Arts Administration.
