Utah Symphony | Utah Opera INVITES ARTS GROUPS TO PARTICIPATE IN SEASON-LONG “CELEBRATING BEETHOVEN” FESTIVAL

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Symphony | Utah Opera (USUO) will present a season-long performance outreach festival celebrating the life and works of composer Ludwig van Beethoven.

As a foundation of the festival, which will run from September 2011 to May 2012, the Utah Symphony has already begun performing a season-long cycle of all nine Beethoven Symphonies as well as his “Emperor” Piano Concerto, and Utah Opera will present Beethoven’s only opera, “Fidelio.”

In collaboration with community partners, the festival will feature online lectures, a film series, artistic presentations and interactive events, as well as an open invitation to all community groups interested in joining the collaboration through USUO’s online “Beethoven Calendar.”

This Beethoven Calendar will be hosted on the USUO website in an effort to illustrate the impact of Beethoven’s music. Any community organization interested in participating can submit details of events and performances that feature at least one work by Beethoven between September of 2011 and May of 2012. Those interested should contact Paula Fowler (pfowler@usuo.org) for more information.

More special events of note in the Celebrating Beethoven Festival include lecture demonstrations of Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas by Utah Symphony Principal Keyboard Jason Hardink on the stage of Abravanel Hall (seating is limited), an interactive side-by-side program for amateur musicians wishing to play with Utah Symphony musicians, and an Afternoon Tea event at the Grand America Hotel featuring Utah Symphony musicians and Utah Opera Ensemble Artists performing Beethoven songs and chamber music.

“We hope that our Celebrating Beethoven festival will excite all parts of our community to listen to, enjoy and appreciate more deeply the music of this Maestro,” said Paula Fowler, Director of Education and Community Outreach at Utah Symphony | Utah Opera. “Beethoven’s work continues to influence our world two centuries after he wrote it, and we hope this festival will give musicians and music-lovers alike a chance to enjoy it.”

The “Celebrating Beethoven” festival will mark the ninth annual outreach festival presented by Utah Symphony | Utah Opera. This year’s partners and individual contributors include The Grand America hotel, the Salt Lake City Public Library, scholars Jeff Olpin and Luke Howard, Utah Symphony Principal Keyboard Jason Hardink, the NOVA Chamber Music Society, the Gina Bachauer Concert Series, the Salt Lake Symphony and the Expositions concert series. Special funding has been provided by the John and Marcia Price Family Foundation and the Utah Humanities Council. See below for a full schedule with venue information.
