Utah Humanities Council’s 14th Annual Book Festival Lineup Announced
Sept 26, 2011 — Celebrating its fourteenth year this October, the Utah Humanities Book Festival is Utah’s signature literary event. The festival is a chance for book lovers of all types to relax and enjoy some great, no-charge events at various locations throughout Utah.
The Festival begins September 30th with a grand kick-off at the Salt Lake City Main Library with Robert Fulghum, famous for his 1988 inspirational nonfiction work All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten which stayed on the NYT Bestseller list for nearly two years. In Salt Lake City specifically, the festival consists of on-stage interviews, a poetry slam with Jesse Parent, films, workshops, bookmaking for children and adults, a Rare Books Roadshow, plus much more.
Beginning September 30th and extending throughout National Book Month (October), this year’s festival involves many other communities across the state and promises to offer something for everyone.
Festival Director David Pace notes that author participation at this year’s Festival is especially strong. “We’re not only a statewide literary event we’re month-long, so that you can catch just about every author and presenter if you want to. Check out our website map and our print program,” he suggests.“ From Brigham City to Bicknell and from Moab to Delta you can join your fellow Utahns to celebrate books and reading.” The festival has a reputation for bringing in national and local authors in conversation with each other ‘on stage’ and representing almost every genre including, this year, fiction, biography, children’s and young adult literature, poetry, history, memoir—even cooking and travel.
Some of this year’s leading presenters include celebrated Pulitzer Prize recipient, Marilynn Robinson (Housekeeping, Gilead, Home); ), bi-lingual Children’s author Amada Irma Perez (Nana’s Big Surprise, My Diary from Here to There, My Very Own Room); internationally acclaimed thriller writer and consulting producer on ABC’s “V,” Gregg Hurwitz (The Tower, They’re Watching); and phenomenally popular local author, Brandon Mull (Fablehaven series) presenting on his Utah Book Award children’s book “Pingo” and his young adult fantasy books. These, among many other authors, will enrich and enliven Utah communities during this exciting month-long event.
The Book Festival continues to expand locations around Utah. Currently, 2011 events are scheduled in Logan, Brigham City, Tremonton, Ogden, Salt Lake City, West Valley City, Sandy, Midvale, Orem, Provo, Park City, Ephraim, Delta, Bicknell, Boulder, Cedar City, Moab, and St. George.
